Smoke is an effect that can appear in the arena. It obscures the line of sight for people inside the smoke and for those trying to see what's behind it, making it difficult to target or observe enemies.

  • A Smoke Grenade releases smoke upon the second impact with the ground or other surface.
  • A Powder Canister will release smoke upon implosion.

Smoke makes it harder to look past the cloud. Any contestant inside the smoke cloud will have a visual filter applied that greatly reduces their vision depending on how deep within the smoke cloud they are.

Additionally, outlines of enemy contestants will be hidden either when a contestant has the smoke visual filter applied or when the enemy contestant is the one inside the smoke.

A smoke cloud will not expand, shrink, move with objects or react to gravity during its lifespan. This means that if a smoke cloud is triggered on a moving structure, the smoke cloud will not move with the structure.

Smoke can counter fire by immediately extinguishing it. While smoke does not have any effect on the primary attack of Flamethrower, it can stop the after-burn effect.

  • Smoke canisters and grenades can be used to hide contestants from enemy sightlines.
  • Hiding in smoke while defending a cashout can help kill stealing enemies without being spotted.
  • Thermal Vision can be used to see inside and through the smoke cloud, making it a powerful combination for ambushing enemies. Players seen through the smoke aren't highlighted.
